As a skin master, I can tell you that travel and climate change are two of the biggest stressors for skin. It’s not just about a quick change in temperature; it's a series of events that can disrupt your skin's natural balance.
The Stress of Travel: It All Starts with the Flight
The minute you step on a plane, your skin's health is challenged. The cabin air is incredibly dry, with a humidity level often at just 15%(yuck). This is much lower than the typical home environment (around 40-50%). This dry air acts like a sponge, pulling moisture out of your skin, leaving it feeling tight, dry, and looking dull.
The lack of moisture can also disrupt your skin's natural protective barrier, making it more sensitive and susceptible to bacteria. This can lead to breakouts and irritation, even on a short flight. The stress of travel itself can also cause an increase in cortisol, a hormone that can trigger inflammation and breakouts.
Climate Change: A Challenge for Your Skin
Once you land, your skin has to quickly adapt to a new climate, and each one presents a different challenge.
-
Hot & Humid Climates: In places like the tropics, the air is thick with moisture. This can cause your skin to feel congested and lead to clogged pores and breakouts. The heat can also cause an increase in oil production, making your skin look shiny and feel heavy.
-
Cold & Dry Climates: In high altitudes or during winter, the air is thin and lacks humidity. The cold can also restrict blood flow, making your skin look pale and feel tight. It can lead to a compromised skin barrier, leaving your skin flaky and dry.
-
Urban Climates: City air is filled with pollution, which can be a major stressor for your skin. These tiny particles can settle on your skin, leading to premature aging and a dull complexion.
Understanding these factors is the first step to keeping your skin healthy and happy. By using the right products at the right time, you can give your skin the support it needs to stay radiant.
